Rita Williams

APTRA has awarded its Stan Chambers Award for Extraordinary Achievement to veteran Bay Area television reporter Rita Williams. Williams retired last year from KTVU in Oakland after 35 years with the station.

Williams opened KTVU’s San Francisco bureau, covered four national political conventions, the assassinations of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk and the shooting of unarmed BART passenger Oscar Grant. She has won numerous awards during her career, including APTRA’s Chris Harris Reporter of the Year award.

Previous winners of the Stan Chambers Award for Extraordinary Achievement include Hal Eisner of KTTV, Los Angeles, and Hank Plante of KPIX, San Francisco. The award is named for longtime KTLA Los Angeles TV reporter Stan Chambers.

Dayana Contreras

The Associated Press Radio Television Association has awarded its Clete Roberts/Kathryn Dettman Memorial Scholarship to California State University Fresno student Dayana Contreras.

"Of all this year’s entries for the APTRA scholarship, Dayana stood out because of her passion for the medium," said APTRA board president John Shaffer. "She's interned in both radio and TV and it is my hope that the scholarship money will help her pursue her dream of a career in broadcasting."

Dayana is majoring in Mass Communications and Journalism with an emphasis in broadcasting at CSU Fresno. "My passion for broadcasting ignited as I graduated high school," she said. "I found my love for the industry and am now on a mission to live out a dream."

The scholarship is named for veteran Southern California broadcast journalist Clete Roberts and former AP writer and reporter Kathryn Dettman.
